Disruptive Innovations
Personal Computers
and
Brother
What is Brother?
Brother is a Japanese multinational electronics and electrical equipment company that produced many products before but stopped producing them because of disruptive innovations.
Brother was founded by Kanekichi Yasui in 1908 but at that time it had a different name Yasui Sewing Machine Co. They provided repair services for sewing machines. In 1940's, Kanekichi's son, Masayoshi, took over the company and started to produce sewing machines. In 1962, they managed to change the company name to Brother Industries. In 1961 to 1980, Brother produced typewriters which were very famous at that time. They even made an electronic typewriter but in 1980's the personal computers went on the market. People stopped buying electronic typewriters and started to buy personal computers. The personal computer was and is a very useful thing. On typewriters, you could just write but on a personal computer, you could and still can do many other things such as browsing the internet or writing to someone via email. Also on a typewriter, if you would do a mistake you couldn't erase it because there was no backspace. On a personal computer, you can delete as many mistakes you want and you don't need to start typing again just because of one mistake.
History of Brother
So what that meant to Brother was that they stopped producing the typewriters. Their income decreased a lot but they managed to get out from this little crisis. In 1987 they made an electronic printer and fax which no one ever did so that made Brother more rich and more famous. Till now they are selling printers that are very good and famous among people. Even though they made a lot of money with the typewriters, I think they make more with the printers.
For whom is the personal computer targeted?
The personal computer is targeted for both, low-quality users and demand users. It is pretty easy to use so that is a pro for the low-quality users and you can do many other things on the computer so that is a pro for the demand users. In conclusion, the personal computer is a very useful innovation for the humanity but today, many people are addicted to it and that is a pretty bad thing.
